How We Treat Gum Disease

Accurate diagnosis and treatment plan

Staff about to take x-ray of patient. Patient smiling.

We will do a thorough diagnosis to determine the extent of any gum or bone loss as a result of gum disease.

To determine the extent of any gum disease, Dr. Israelson takes a set of digital X-rays and, as needed, a 3D CT scan of your entire jaw. These images show the levels of bone surrounding the teeth. He gently probes the depth of the spaces between your gums and teeth (known as pockets) to assess the level of gum detachment. He checks your gums to see if they have receded away from the teeth, and manually checks for any teeth that are loose.

Based on his findings from the exam and X-ray images, Dr. Israelson formulates an individualized treatment plan to eradicate the infection and restore your gums to health. As a periodontist, Dr. Israelson is the most qualified to accurately diagnose and plan treatment for gum disease.

Deep cleaning

Our hygienists are very trained and experienced, and provide thorough cleanings using gentle techniques.

Our usual first line of attack in treating gum disease is a thorough deep cleaning to remove the accumulated bacterial deposits from the teeth – this action is also known as scaling and root planing. Our hygienists are very trained and experienced, and provide thorough cleanings using gentle techniques.

Deep cleanings are much more thorough than routine cleanings in a dental office. In many cases, we can decrease pocket depths thorough deep cleanings and possibly avoid the need for surgery.

Effective home oral care education

To make sure you can keep the disease at bay and maintain your oral health, our hygienists also provide comprehensive home oral care education. Effective home oral care is vital for the long-term maintenance of your oral health between visits and after treatment is completed.

Follow-up evaluation

Dr. Israelson sees you several weeks after your deep cleaning for a thorough follow-up evaluation. In the evaluation he checks the healing progress of your gums, including the amount of gum tissue that has reattached to the teeth and reduced the depth of any pockets.

Treating severe gum disease

Dr. Israelson will go over the options with you and explain what treatments are available.
