Brushing, flossing and making regular visits to our office may seem like the only way to keep your teeth healthy, but there are other steps you can take to make sure your smile stays healthy and strong. Diet plays a large role in the overall health of our bodies, and getting enough water is part of a good diet. It may seem strange, but skipping expensive bottled water for tap water can actually keep your teeth strong. Tap water is effective at maintaining a healthy smile, because it contains a chemical known as fluoride. Fluoride is a naturally occurring chemical that can be found in a wide variety of foods and drinks. One of the highest concentrations of fluoride that we can have each day is tap water. Compared to bottled water, tap water can have up to twice the amount of fluoride, which makes it even more of a super drink. What Makes Fluoride So Good for Your Teeth? In short, Fluoride strengthens the enamel of your teeth by bonding to the surface of our teeth. This is important because the enamel covering our teeth can't be regenerated by our bodies. Once enamel is gone, it's gone forever. By strengthening our enamel, we can protect it against bacterial decay and physical damage. In the long-term, strong enamel also can prevent costly dental procedures like fillings and crowns. Getting enough water every day is important, especially for your teeth. Always try to keep some water next to you throughout the day so that you can get the benefits of fluoride. Drinking tap water can be beneficial to your teeth and your bank account. If you have any more questions about your dental health or ways to protect your teeth, give our office a call and we will be happy to answer any question you may have. |
